2017 CME Group Trading Challenge

Congratulations Faculty of Business teams!

This year, Athabasca University sent a record-breaking six teams into a financial battlefield know as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Trading Challenge. The preliminary rounds started on February 14 and went until February 22. After preliminary rounds were completed and portfolio’s evaluated, two of our teams, The Bulls: Geeta Sainani, Chandan Johal , and Gurdeep Parmar, and Trident Traders: Tina Martin, Celena Peppard, O. P. Sihota, Scott Birt, and Michael Jones, finished within the top 10%, earning them each a spot in the final round and an invitation to Chicago for CME Group’s Day of Market Education. Honorable mentions to our other AU teams who fought hard to make gains to the last trade.

Take a moment to consider the fierce competition against some of the world’s best business schools – 595 teams from 242 universities with a total of 2,383 students representing 35 countries from around the world.

“Congratulations to all of our teams for their excellent performance in the preliminary rounds of the CME Trading Challenge, having put Athabasca University in the spotlight among some of the best universities from all over the world,” said Dr. Deborah Hurst, Dean, Faculty of Business.

But, the competition isn’t over yet. The next stop for our top finishing teams is the final round of the CME Trading Challenge which takes place February 27 – March 10. We know you will be right by our side cheering our teams to victory!

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group Trading Challenge is an international competition for business students that provides an authentic, first-hand experience trading in financial markets. It encourages students to gain and develop a deeper understanding of the interactions among trading and markets in a dynamic real-time environment.

Using live market updates in a simulated environment, students work together over a four-week period to build their portfolio of investments. The team with the largest valued portfolio at the end of the CME Trading Challenge wins ultimate bragging rights and cash prizes! The top 10% finishing teams are also invited to attend an exclusive one-day Market Education Conference hosted by the CME group in Chicago, Illinois. While there they have the opportunity to learn from business experts about the global marketplace and to network with people from the industry’s top-performing firms.

AU Associate Professor Dr. Eric Wang described the CME competition as giving the students “an excellent opportunity to practice trading in futures contracts, to further learn about the relations between macroeconomic variables and commodity prices, and how to collect and critically analyze data. They were also able to develop and grow their teamwork skills – a vital part of working in any environment.”

This year’s teams were coached by the following Athabasca University faculty:

Dr. Eric Wang – Associate Professor, Finance; Undergraduate Program Director
Dr. Merlyn Foo – Assistant Professor, Finance
Dr. Alex Kondra – MBA Program Director and Associate Professor, Organizational Theory
Dr. Hussein Al-Zyoud – Assistant Professor, Economics

The Athabasca University Faculty advisors would like to recognize and extend a special thank you to Alexander Poulton and Todd Boyer, both former CME Trading Challenge competitors, who each delivered a training seminar to this year’s teams.
