About the Scholarship


Up to $50,000 will be provided for tuition, course materials, and to support attendance at one in-residence elective course. Funds will be provided in the form of credits directly to Athabasca University on the student’s behalf.  


One scholarship is available and will close June 15, 2018.

Award description:

The KPMG Foundation Community Leaders Scholarship is intended to equip emerging leaders within Canada’s not-for-profit and community service sectors with the critical management skills and abilities that will enable them to contribute at a high level to their organizations.

Conditions of eligibility:
  • Candidates must have been offered acceptance to Athabasca University’s MBA (MBA application process);
  • Candidates must be residents of Canada;
  • Candidates must have a proven history of managing and/or leading a not-for-profit organization in the fields of charitable, voluntary, or community service
  • Candidates must have the potential to become a leader within the not-for-profit or community services sectors.
Application process:
  • Step 1 – Candidates must first apply to the MBA no later than June 15, 2018 to be accepted into the MBA for executives program starting August 13, 2018. 
  • Step 2 – Complete and submit the scholarship application separately from the MBA application. Scholarship application must be submitted no later than June 15, 2018. For further inquiries regarding the MBA application or the Scholarship application, please email or contact:

  • The MBA application will be assessed and offered admission by the Graduate Admissions Committee.
  • The successful MBA candidate would have to accept the MBA offer to start in August 13, 2018.
  • The KPMG Scholarship award is assessed and offered by a special committee decision.
Application instructions and checklist:

Applications for the KPMG Foundation Community Leaders Scholarship must be completed and submitted as provided. Forms that are recreated or reformatted will not be accepted. Scholarship applicants must complete the entire application package including:

  • Sections A to F. Please provide responses in the allotted fields and ensure you accept the Terms and Conditions.
  • Letter of endorsement from your organization’s board of directors which includes the board’s willingness to support you in completing the MBA and to have the organization profiled in the community and in the media.
Adjudication process:
  • Eligible applications will be assessed by an adjudication panel consisting of a representative from Athabasca University, University Relations department and representatives from the Faculty of Business and the Executive Director for the MBA program.
  • The adjudication panel may request an interview with candidates as part of the review process and may request additional information from the applicant or the applicant’s organization if required.

All applicants should expect to be notified of scholarship status by no later than the end of July 2018.

Selection Criteria: 

The emphasis for award selection includes assessment of:

  • The candidate’s application for admission to the Athabasca University MBA;
  • The candidate’s history managing and or leading a not-for-profit organization;
  • The candidate’s scope and commitment to the fields of charitable, voluntary, or community service;
  • The impressions of the candidate from the reference letters and letter of endorsement.
